State legislature

State Representative · 44th District

Steve Frisbie

Elected in 2024 to represent Michigan's 44th House District, covering Battle Creek, Springfield, Albion, and the Bedford, Pennfield, Convis, Lee, Clarence, and Sheridan townships.

Four decades as a paramedic and ambulance service administrator, a volunteer firefighter, and an adjunct instructor at Kellogg Community College for 23 years. Before the House he served 13 years as a Calhoun County Commissioner, including a term as chairman.

He is vice chair of the House Finance Committee and serves on Transportation & Infrastructure, Energy, and Health Policy. He lives in Pennfield Township with his wife Lorene; they have four adult children.

Sheriff

Steven Hinkley

Thirty-plus years with the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office, beginning in 1990: patrol, corrections, court transport, and the detective bureau, where he supervised the Major Crimes Task Force. Appointed Sheriff in March 2020 and elected to four-year terms in 2021 and 2025. He has taught at Kellogg Community College for 28 years and has lived in Calhoun County for 32.

Clerk & Register of Deeds

Kimberly A. Hinkley

Calhoun County's Clerk and Register of Deeds, responsible for elections, vital records, land records, and the circuit court clerk's office. She was elected to lead the Michigan Association of County Clerks as its 2026 president.

County Treasurer

Melinda Weaver

Appointed County Treasurer in May 2025. The treasurer collects and invests county funds, runs delinquent tax collection and foreclosure prevention, and administers the Land Bank Authority. She was elected to the Michigan Municipal Treasurers Association board of directors.

Water Resources Commissioner

Tommy Miller

Elected on a partisan basis every four years to administer Michigan's Drain Code of 1956. The office builds and maintains county drains, sets drainage districts, approves drainage in new developments, maintains court-ordered lake levels, and administers the county's storm sewer permit.

Board of Commissioners

Six of seven districts, held by Republicans.

The board sets the county budget, appoints department leadership, and decides what county government does and does not do. Districts 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are represented by Republicans.

District 1

Dominic Oo

City of Springfield and Battle Creek precincts 4, 5, 7, 12, and 13. Serves on the county Planning Commission, the Trailway Alliance, and the Senior Millage Advisory Committee.

District 3

Albert Morehart

Battle Creek precincts 2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 11, and 13. Serves on the Economic Development Corporation, the Battle Creek LDFA, Community Action, and the Goguac Lake Board.

District 4

Dan Strowbridge

Bedford Charter Township, Convis Township, and Pennfield Charter Township precincts 2 and 3. Serves on the Consolidated Dispatch Authority and the Legislative Liaisons Committee.

District 5 · Board Chair

Derek King

Emmett Charter Township, LeRoy Township, and Newton Township. Chairs the board and sits on the Budget Committee, Board of Health, Land Bank Authority, Drainage Board, and Workforce Development Board.

District 6

Matt Saxton

City of Marshall and the Athens, Burlington, Clarendon, Fredonia, Marshall, and Tekonsha townships. Serves on Parks and Recreation, the Economic Development Corporation, and the Risk Management Committee.

District 7

Gary Tompkins

City of Albion and the Albion, Clarence, Eckford, Homer, Lee, Marengo, and Sheridan townships. Serves on the Budget Committee, the Broadband Taskforce, and the Fair Board.
